Hi Thelma! And all!
It's nice to get the listing in such a widely-read and respected paper like the NY Times, and it's basically a positive review, but there's a lot that bothers me about the write-up! The reviewer seems to take a right-wing and dismissive attitude towards the whole thing, certainly he doesn't think much of Crass. Also the reviewer paints me and the project as apolitical, which is a misrepresentation. It'll be interesting to see if this sets the tone for whatever other US press the album might garner, whether positive or negative.

I wasn't too thrilled by that write up either, but that's why they call it "The Good Grey New York Times." On the other hand, what punk bands are reviewed there in? What mention of Crass have they made? I don't know, but I assume, none. So, at least you were socially acceptable enough to bring it to their attention. I think of Pat Boone covering Little Richard or Elvis covering Big Mamma Thornton , nice white guy popularizers of artists too bad to get through. Anyway, the scruffy armpit picture is very cool and most people don't remember what they read in the papers, so I am very happy to see you there. |

I've seen that in a few reviews. There's lots of stuff like "who'd have thought someone could make Crass sound good?!?!" which seems a bit narrow-minded. The point about making the songs more accessible is most definitely valid, but sometimes Crass seem to get a bit of a bum deal. _________________ myspace.com/frozymusic |

Also: "He sings in a callow voice like a passionless busker, plays with folk-guitar picking technique and uses arrangements that sometimes tend toward prettiness."
Firstly the "passionless busker" simile seemed a little odd. There's plenty of passion all the way through the album. And "tends towards prettiness". That implies that something a little rough can't be pretty. Which is, of course, bullshit. It's a very pretty album!
It's a good review, but seems to have a lot of backhanded compliments, like saying "ooh, you look really good... for your age", or something.
Well, that's my overly critical interpretation. _________________ myspace.com/frozymusic |
