I saw Pavement back in 92 and that was awesome, with Gary their first crazy drummer, i also enjoyed a lot the pixies show at the zenith, Paris, last year......
One of the gigs that impressed me the most was My bloody valentine back in 1991 in Rennes, that was amazing....
There use to be great gigs in my city back in the 90s but now it's only hip hop and djs....berk !
Yo la tengo in St malo this summer was a great gig too...
The last great bands that come here were Frank Black a couple of years ago and recently Jeff Lewis and shwervon, both in small venues, wich i like the most....

I hope more bands will come in Rennes next year cos taking the train to Paris is really expensive Sad

pixies were good, but seeing them in such a huge stadium kinda took a way from it a little for me, but the best live band ive ever seen is world/inferno friendship society, ive seen them 9 times now, they mostly only tour the east coast of america though and i see a lot of folks here live in europe!

Sonic Youth headlining, with the Boredoms, (by far the showstoppers) and John Spencer's Blues Explosion, (didn't hardly notice him) opening at Roseland in NYC sometime around '93. Maybe it was my first concert and that's why it was so good.

I guess my favorite one was the first one, beck at the Bataclan in Paris in 1995 or 1996 (i'm not sure), probably just because it was the 1st (but beck came at the end with a huge horse mask and it was awesome)

but i have to admit i really hated the pixies concert at the Zenith, it just seemed to me that they didn't care about playing anymore, they looked almost as bored as me, but it's my own opinion, i don't wanna debate, it's a concert, people like it or not, noone is right or wrong.

most of sonic youth concert i've been to were pretty amazing too, patti smith this summer, never seen such a charism before her, the beastie boys were a good memories, i really enjoyed herman dune's concert at the trabendo a month ago.

Oh, and i almost forgot this band i saw this summer in ny, if anyone else knows it, it's called Mt.Gigantic and they just drove me crazy...

i think the best show i've ever seen was sonic youth in 97 in brest. they played a festival near a castle. the stage was just before a cliff. very impressive setting for an amazing show.
other great memories : my 1st mogwai show (they scared the shit outta me) and neil young (guess i dont need to make any comments on this one).

Pixies at Reading Festival last year was immense. That was great as was the rest of the festival (especially Adam Green).
The first time I saw Adam Green, in Brighton over a year ago was pretty special, as it was the first time I saw a really small, intimate show, with music like nothing else I had heard before.

well, the best gig was herman düne in munich, it´s been amazing!
i´ve seen them 3 times now, but munich was ace!

the first one was in innsbruck, it was their first and till now only show in austria, a friend of mine, felix, and me got there by train, walked around in the city, drank coffee and asked where the spot is, it´s been the PMK which is nearby the train station, but we didn´t know.
somewhere around 6p.m. we stood there in front of the spot, waiting for the dünes cause i asked david if we may could do an interview, he said yes.
about a quarter hour before they arrived we went in and asked the guy who was working there if we may could have a seat and another coffee, for sure we could.
so when they came along they first asked us if we´re the promoter guys, but we wheren´t, he was somewhere else, so we made some coffee for them, not for diane cluck, she didn´t drink one.
soon after we went downstairs for the interview, i guess you can read that in davids diary, we hardly had any questions or we where afraid of asking them something stupid, so we just talked a bit about records, in the meantime we listened to a mixtape, velvet underground, jack lewis, jeff lewis, and so on.
in the diary david wrote that we where the guys who always smoked doobies, this is just kind of true, mostly we rolled cigarettes, only sometimes joint.
after that we got back upstairs, drank coffee and had a fine meal together.
later they started soundchecking and stuff, so i did an interview with diane, we talked about the afny collaborations album she did with jeffrey and how bad that locations with air conditions are.
when i got back upstairs andré and felix where talking about communism, but i don´t know exactly what they talked.
then there was a cd skip and andré and me started dancing to it, quite funny!
later diane opened her set, can´t remember any tracklist, but it was totally great.
then the dünes took over, diane sat on the stage and played percussions, it´s been amazing, somewhere about 50 people where there and all where dancing their asses off, it was good to see that the audience was amazed!
after the show we bought some records, i guess not on top, wiser man/loneliest man 7" and some AHD solo stuff and a t-shirt.
too i got a david deporis promo cd for fre from diane which was totally nice.
then i asked neman if he could may send me a copy of the rama huset album, he promised that i´ll get it.
somewhen we needed to go but not without saying goodbye which was taking quite a lot of time.
then we´ve seen andré standing outside with a beer in his hand, we talked with him and he told my friend felix that he quite looks like jeffrey lewis and about what we drink here when we really wanna get drunk, schnaps of course i said.
then i promised andré to bring him some to the next show somewhen.
so after all, totally happy and still a bit drunk we went to this market near the train station, listened very quietly to a mixtape and rolled another doobie.
then we took the train home, still listening to they go to the woods, everyone was sleeping in the train but nobody got upset cause of the music, good for us.
you should have seen this gigantic smiles on our faces!!!!

the second time we saw them in konstanz, at the theater foyer which was a really nice spot.
i started talking to andré first i guess, then david joined, we talked about jeff and jacks city & eastern songs album and calvin johnsons before the dream faded album and how goooood they are, it was totally nice.
then i told david that í would have the 2 albums with me, burned for him, so i gave them to him, he was kind of happy.
somewhen, after they had their meal, i sat next to andré and gave him a bottle of schnaps, i´ve stolen it from my mother cause she´d never drinks it, but she noticed and told me a few days after that this bottle was worth somewhere about 50euros, but i didn´t care, it´s as i said, she wouldn´t drink it.
so andré said that i could have a cd for free for the schnaps but i already bought em all, so i told him that i´ll send him a mail and tell him what i want.
then we came in touch with julie doiron, she was totally nice to us.
well, the show was kinda funny to view for the people, first julie solo, then julie with HD as backing band and then HD with julie on bass.
later i was talking with dr. schönberg about his band berg sans nipple and some other stuff.
neman gave me a labolduc album for free, great!
after the show we sat together, drank the bourbon that the promoter gave us, he just asked me for a few fags, smart of course, or how he said "geile ostware!".
it was nice, david was playing uke all the time and neman was shouting stuff, that was the time i reminded what a guy asked us in the music store when we where listening to the mini team we are from satansfingers (DIHD/leah hayes), he asked "is this a hippie re-union or what?", "nope!" we said, "that´s hi-quality antifolk, hehe".
later fudge, my good friend and band mate sang a lil bit while david was still playing uke, it was nice.
so we sat there, talking about things, drinking bourbon and smoking fags.
later they had to go, and it took us about half an hour to say goodbye to everyone.
then shortly before they drove away neman asked me if we´d come to the munich show a few days later, we all said that we have to work there, but he told us that we have to come, he´ll give us free tix, and so we said yes.

so a few days later we drove to munich, watching them the third time.
they played at rote sonne, nice spot, but not as nice as the theater foyer in konstanz.
when we got there we talked to david and neman, dunno what, i just remember that i gave our cd with der letzte tschick and kreml brother (our own bands) to them.
then the promoter came and throwed us out cause they opened somewhere in an hour, we told em that we are on the guest list and that we won´t steal anything, but we had to go.
so we went to a turkish restaurant and ordered some falafel, it was good and really cheap, and he even gave us a chai for free, i have to go there again!
then we went back to the spot, i started talking to dr. schönberg, the i got out the schnaps i had with me, we all drank some, then andré said that he´d take it backstage, for later.
then i asked david if he may would draw something on my shirt, he did, a nice nonhorse, oh yeah!!!
soon after they started their show, julie first, david on drums, andré on guitar.
she was so kind to play the request i told her, it was "so fast" and the following song was for us too, "shady lane" of pavement, wonderful.
the dünes played a great set, we where just dancing the whole time, smoking fags like true masters.
they even played a totally great version of "recording farfisa", i taped it all on my walkman-recorder but it sounded crappy, i guess it´s broken, arrgh.
later we sat together again, drinking schnaps and talking bout things.
then we had to go cause we all had to work the next day, so we said goodbye, again it took nearly an hour till we finally got out of the spot.
then driving home was fun cause we found a kreator tape in the car of our friend mario, it was kinda funny, headbanging all the time, hehe.

so well, that´s what happened at those concerts, they all where great, totally great, i really wanna see them again as fast as i can!!!!

come back dünes, please come back!

cheers,

thegardener

Sonic Youth at Webster Hall, New York, August 2004 with Magik Markers and White Magic. How do Thurston and Kim still look like teenagers?? And the Magik Markers were great... is anybody planning to go see them on their UK tour in May?
