Yeah I wasn't sure what that was all about! I liked the first song Jeff played solo, the one with the Ptchfork reference in it. Does anyone know which song this is?
Cheers for the photos link, I'll look later. The Adelphi is a great venue.

Love that song, been listening to a session of it a lot this week -One thing I felt might be missing from 'Em Are I was a really long story-based song over a single chord sequence - really hope he plays it tonight.

Setlist from the Bristol show:

(in order)

Intro
Sea Song
Slogans
Bugs and Flowers
Broken Hearts
*song about water?* - sure this was an old one but just couldn't place it. Mentions water a lot... any ideas?!
Roll Bus Roll
End Result
Upside Down Cross
History of Communism in Korea
They Always Knew
East River
I Couldn't Take It Any more
-
Jack song (I didn't recognise it... maybe a cover? Jack took most lead but Jeff sang chorus)
Banned From the Roxy
Singing Tree
Texas

Highlights were I couldn't take it anymore and Singing Tree, but overall the show just didn't feel right. Usually the venue is really good but they had a ridiculously early curfew (10pm) but still put on two support bands making Jeff's set feel really rushed with almost no crowd interaction.

The sound as well was dreeeeadful. The guitar was way too loud and piercing, backing vocals were almost non-existant, as were the drums. Very bizarre set up - as a sound engineer surely you'd notice and tweak it at some point?!

Lovers - it looks like an extra date cos the Sunday one has sold out. Haven't seen it advertised anywhere though.

In fact, I've just checked the Hyde Park site and it's a 2pm show. Look: http://www.hydeparkpicturehouse.co.uk/events.php

I'm unfeasibly excited about the gig in Manchester on Tuesday. Is anybody else going to it?

Tonight's set list from the Hyde Park Picture House in Leeds:

Mini the Moocher
Deer in the Woods
If Life Exists
Broken Heart
Slogans
Posters
Banned from the Roxy
I Couldn't Take It Anymore
Complete History of Communism pt 5 - Korea
Don't be Upset
The Last Time I Did Acid
Creeping Brain
Upside Down Cross
End Result
Walk into the Mirror (Steve Malkmus cover)
Heavy Heart
It's not Impossible
Something Good
Time Machine

(Can't exactly vouch for the order - it was *really* dark and my list is almost illegible and overwritten)

An enjoyable night in an odd venue which forced Dave to play facing the side of the stage in between Jeff and Jack, in front of the cinema screen, with Fletcher over on the right. The sound was boomy and not always helpful. The digital projection of the two videos was a real bonus but the darkness and the hushed atmosphere caused by everyone sitting made Jeff and co seem a little self-conscious. There was some awkward non-banter on stage between songs and some of the usual warmth seemed lost to me.

The rockier numbers worked really well - Dave's drumming was awesome - but as is often the case in the louder ones, Jack's voice over-powered Jeff's a little.

Interesting note: no new CDs for sale ("available in stores") and a weird choice of touring support band in Don't Move.

Michael - I agree with all your side notes, a lot about these dates it seems is a little off. I don't really understand why, but there was a lot of self-consciousness at the Bristol show. I thought maybe because it was almost sound out if not was - but then I'm pretty sure that was the same last time. Weird.

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed Tuesday night in Manchester.

Not only did we get a fantastic new film about an odyssey through an abandoned mine to a magic rock, we were also treated to the Complete History of Punk,

The gig got off to an interesting start, with Jeff realising there was no screen to project on to. So he proceeded to make a makeshift screen by balancing a table vertically on top of an amp (no doubt in contravention of all sorts of health and safety rules), and tape some old posters to it (backwards, so the blank side showed).

All of which was charmingly lo-fi, if a little like a potential Norman Wisdom comedy, but it meant the band were at least 20 minutes late starting, which made the crowd a little restless. They did make up for it though with a set lasting at least an hour and 45 minutes.

Yes, perhaps Jeff did seem a little more self-conscious than usual, and even a little bit combative at times, but it doesn't matter. The great is it's like several different bands in one set - solo acoustic folk whimsy to full on punk noise. And I learned that if I ever I choose to commit suicide by drinking rat poison it's best to pay by cheque.

And we even got some dirty limericks....

I was at Manchester last week too.

Great night out, and really enjoyable as Dr Nick said earlier. The best parts for me were 'the miners and the magic rock' and a new song that I've seen others referring to here as 'I couldn't take it anymore'.

Don't know what DrNick thought about the sound, but at where we were stood, about 15 feet from the stage, the sound seemed pretty poor, with far too much overall bass through the speakers. (I don't mean from the guitar, just an overall boom through the speakers) I thought that a big venue like that would have got the sound spot on, but not so. The sound for the gig at 'The Mad Ferret' pub in Preston last September was much better than the Academy.

Anyway, aside from this gripe a great nights entertainment! Both nights!

It was quite a long show. Here's the set list:-

I picked the winner
Bugs and Flowers
To be objectified
The miners and the magic rock
Seattle
I couldn't take it anymore
Posters
End Result
Broken broken broken heart
Wait it out
Sea Song
Something Good
The Complete History of Communism Part 5 - Korea
Back when I was four
Roll bus roll
Time Machine
Slogans
Walk into the mirror
Don't be upset
Champion Jim
The development of Punk Rock of the Lower East Side
Good old pig, gone to avalon
