New at the NYC Bowery Ballroom merch table 5/10/08 was Jeff and Jack's self- produced CD "City and Eastern tapes , raw versions of City and Eastern Songs."
Arranged in the same order as the Rough Trade CD, it contains more intimate, human-sounding versions of all the City and Eastern songs . They were demos recorded in a basement in NYC ( basement tapes?), a closet in England, and performed live on the radio in NYC.
As a result, the words are more audible, not overwhelmed by the music. I discovered things I never heard before, like Jack yelling " they're stickers" in "Posters."
I realized for the first time that the song following the end of WWOH, "maybe in a few months I'll put out something good" was the song "Something Good."
If you liked the simple, underproduced sound of the now sold out Tapes from the Crypt (and I did) City and Eastern Tapes is something you'll want to own and play a lot. |

I'd also love to hear it. I think for most tracks jeff is at his best with just an acoustic guitar (or two). I'm sure he probably thinks otherwise. |

Good news... I have an exciting upate on the City and Eastern tapes! I got an e-mail from Jeff that should answer all of your questions. Jeff says that he will make an official announcement soon but until then here is a sneak preview...
HI Neil!
I did make some experimental copies of "CIty & Eastern Tapes" on CDR but they are all sold out... however, I'm pleased to announce that a revamped version, with more out-take songs in addition to the album demos (18 tracks total), on real CD, not CDR, with better album art and better liner notes, is currently in production, I'm making 1,000 of them so they should be available for quite some time as soon as I get the CDs back from the pressing plant in a couple weeks, HOPEfully in time to take some copies along on UK/Europe tour in Aug/Sept! (Anybody who bought the experimental first version can contact me for a free upgrade to the improved version). Also I'll have them available on the Olive Juice website maybe as early as Aug 1 if I'm lucky. I'll announce it to the message board - or you can copy and paste this to the board as an advance announcement. Thanks for writing! I'm certainly hoping to add a Scotland date or two to the tour but so far nothing confirmed.
Hope all's great with ya!

After hearing this, I am beyond elated. I'm going to get my hands on this as soon as it hits the distro. I have all the proper full lengths including 12 Crass songs, so hopefully that and this will hold me over until the next full length full of new material. |
