Think back to when you first heard the song - did you really expect it to end with a gay rape fantasy and a sexist analogy involving dicks and pussies? I certainly didn't. I think that's what so great about it - it starts off as a fairly self-indulgent, self-pitying song but then breaks out into completely unexpected territory.
By the way, has anyone ever considered the similarity between the end of the song and the end of 'Team America'? And is 'Unicef Box' Jack's equivalent song, in that it questions the value of being artist versus doing something more socially useful? _________________ http://www.myspace.com/arhythmicnick |

i won't tell you how i reacted the first time i listenned to this song...let's say that i can be credulous sometimes......... i guess i overestimated jeff's faculty to tell intimate, embarrassing stuff...cuz for a second ( or a minute) i thought it was true or at least one of his biggest fear/fantasy and that he needed to express it in a way...hummm...and now that i know the meaning of the end of the song, cuz jeff explained it in a topic somewhere...well, i feel like a jerk....ohhh i'm used to it tho! _________________

I think that's the point though ema, that the song is a comment on the confessional / autobiographical nature of Jeff's music. There are two types of song - the comic book type ones (zombies, time machines) which we know to be fantasy, and the realistic ones, which we naturally assume to be true. But 'Will Oldham' merges the two styles, messing with out expectations - we expect it to be real, but it develops into a fantasy / nightmare.
When I met Jeff I wanted to ask what was real, did he really meet a girl outside the Chelsea and talk about Leonard Cohen, and so on. But I didn't, partly 'cause I thought it would seem a bit odd, but also because it doesn't really matter what is true and what isn't. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/arhythmicnick |

We talked a little about stuff like that. We were playing Don't Be upset and I asked him if it was real, becuse if it was I was going to cry. He said Everything that sounds true is true".
If I had that moment again I would have made some hilarious joke like "so, shoot the head kill the ghoul?" |
