This one took a while.
It's one of my favourites.
Disconsolate, one may fall under a sad spell of melancholy
Drearily colouring one’s perceptions that even the brightest spectacle
Of natural wonder, or of man’s generosity to fellow man
Or any like display which might ordinarily give cheer.
And, disallowing the warmer chambers of one’s heart to open
In acceptance of what tokens of good will, good fortune and provenance are cast one’s way
The darker recesses of the mood shadowed mind will grasp at these bits and twist with fingers of perversity
Like the cat’s cradle, strands of these offerings, till all are transformed in ones perceptions, into mockeries, cruel masquerades, impish visions of fineries, serving only to taunt the mind turned convex to repel them
No word of cheer, no shoulder of sympathy,
No welcome _________
The project of seeing the drab underlying material of which sunshine is masked by thin and falsifying light
One will assume a stance of superior and sorrowful knowing
And an impenetrable cloud will have affixed itself to one’s inner horizons.
When, in the heavy footed wanderings, which are the one exercise the sad spell allows,
One should happen onto a certain side street, or particular punch(?) of meadow,
Or any other lonely or infrequently travelled landscape,
One will scarcely notice the growing unfamiliarity of the green grey street-post, or the untrampled weeds, or the unfootprinted sands or muds, or dust-caked car doors.
Disconsolate, one may fall under a sad spell of melancholy
Drearily colouring one’s perceptions that even the brightest spectacle
Of natural wonder, or of man’s generosity to fellow man
Or any like display which might ordinarily give cheer.
It all adds up sad when you make sad maths
So don’t take that walk down that rotting path.
Jeff or Jack, if you read this, I'd really love any corrections.
Also, I'm never sure if this is actually by Jeff or Jack, or if it is a poem they've decided to use. I always think the languge is a bit different to them. But I'm probably very wrong. _________________ myspace.com/frozymusic |

Sad Math sounds like a Shakespeare or Milton pastiche or some other antique giant of English Literature. I find more redundancies than feeling which is depressing in itself. I never heard it performed so could someone post an mp3? Maybe Jeffrey wrote it while trying to illustrate Macbeth. |

Well,it ends in a rhyming couplet like a Shakespearean sonnet, the imagery is convoluted and some of the sentence structures and word usages are not modern. "Give cheer" for example. I never hear Jeff talk or write like that. This kind of poetry would now be considered artificial or pretentious except as an exercise in imitating what you read in English Literature. I wonder if "provenance" is really "providence" as "provenance" ( an unusual word I never heard anyone use) doesn't make sense in that context. If you post the mp3 on Sendspace and give us the address everybody can hear it. If not send me the best version of it by PM. |

Now that I heard it performed it's more interesting with music and chanting. Kind of like a Patti Smith poetry reading. Bet the crowd will prefer the Creeping Brain . Thanks to Jack for figuring out what's being said here as it's difficult to understand. |
