Review from http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=19557
In the pantheon of rock&roll, the subject of fly-posting has been cruelly and systematically overlooked... until now! The opening track on NYC brothers Jeffrey and Jack Lewis new LP 'City & Eastern Songs', 'Posters' details the travails of their advertising venture; starting at the Xerox shop and ending 24 hours later with the unanswered question "where have all our posters gone, I'd like to know who took them down!". Eat your heart out Dylan! Sounding like a glam-garage band in the style of 'Jesus Christ Superstar', the Lewis brothers are part of the anti-folk scene and share both a sound and aesthetic with the likes of the Moldy Peaches and their professed inspiration Daniel Johnston. Seemingly delighted in detailing the minutiae of everyday life, the subject matter of 'City & Eastern Songs' swings between ill-fitting shoes ('Don't Be Upset') and spotting Will Oldham on the tube ('Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror'), delivered in a variety of styles that range from fiddle-flecked folk and open mouthed rock-squall to monotone electronica and ethereal acoustica. Although it can initially seem quite annoying and somewhat contrived, a few minutes with Jeff and Jack and you're soon round to their way of thinking.. and that's when 'City & Eastern Songs' becomes genuinely addictive. The Brothers gonna work it out... _________________ http://uberaffe.bandcamp.com |

I currently love 'Williamsburg Will Oldam Horror', 'Art Land' and 'The Singing Tree'. I remember seeing Jeff play 'WWOH' live and thinking "What the FUCK? This is genius!", it's such a fantastic song. 'Art Land' is such a great, spikey lo-fi punk tune and 'The Singing Tree' has that dreamy "I-don't-do-LSD-but-check-this-out" magical Jeff vibe to it that I love. And of course, 'Don't Be Upset' is a classic. I was praying it would be on this disc, and it was!
So yeah, I'm very happy right now. _________________ ~ A guy can't have too many friends... |
