God from "Godz" with a "Z", that is.
By some magic coincidence, Paul Thorton of the legendary ESP band the Godz showed up to see Jeff's performance of Punk History on the Lower East Side on Sunday night at the Theatre for the New City, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Jeff told the crowd he grew up around the corner from there and put in a plea for affordable housing as unfortunately, the gentrifiers have priced him out of his "hometown." The God , a lively, big-eyed, bald sixty's-ish man, was so touched by Jeff's performance he went back stage to meet him and shake his hand. Jeff and Jack were introduced by Tuli Kupferberg of the Fugs, Jeff's good friend by now. Drummer Dave accompanied them.
Video to follow.

It's ace to hear stories of gigs from the other side of the water! It's all too easy to only think of Jeff playing Europe.. Also, I was had this slight fear that the only time there would be activity on this board would be when they're about to tour Europe! So thanks!
Erm, that sounds a bit cheesy, and condescending, sorry... |

Does anyone have an idea about why there's more response to Jeff in Europe than in the states? |

In short, no idea, Its nothing to do with publicity because rough trade seem to make little to no effort to inform the world that Jeff exists it seems that all the fans over here stumbled on to his music either by hearing him on specialist radio shows, through friends or by seeing him support acts such as the cribs or Aam Green ( some people discovered anti-folk which led them to Jeff) then we all have to find out about shows by checking here or jeffs site.
I found out about Jeff after a friend heard him on the radio late one night and e-mailed the show asking who that guy was. he bought/downloaded some stuff and played it for me, I was hooked and so it goes on the friends I have on the board are such big fans of Jeffs music they just have to tell somebody - thats why Dav created this Board and why ema went to lengths to explain to a customer in her shop where he can buy Jacks Album online. you'd think that with the passion that accompanies this 'word of mouth' advertising grapevine there really should be an ever growing audience on both sides of the Atlantic. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that people over here are tired of the music we have and have to seek out something good who knows - Anyway this was a long post that didn't really say anything so Ill leave it there! _________________

I'm still kind of surprised I didn't know anything about Jeffrey Lewis until about a year ago even though I live in New York City. Neither of my music inclined older siblings knew anything about him, nor do my music inclined friends. It's very odd.
Maybe it's just that, in the States we have developed such a celebrity culture that it's hard to even get word of mouth if youd don't get a big, full page featured review in a big magazine or Pitchfork Media, or not getting magazine covers.
I think I'd seen him mentioned once or twice, probably on the internet, before I saw a video performance of "Don't Let The Record Label Take You Out To Lunch" on a cable access show we have out here called "New York Noise". _________________ http://myspace.com/theimpossiblebuildings |

No one really knows who he is around here (apart from my converted friends, and the couple of people I saw him with).
Although, no one round here knows who the Pixies are (except for me shouting at them and insulting their music tastes). _________________ myspace.com/frozymusic |

well, i tend to think that the brits usually are more into brit muuuzic....quite chauvinist... they don't really wanna explore the rest of the music around the world and some of them like to live in the past...worshipping the beatles for eg....don't get me wrong i love the fab four or the Who, the Kinks, Syd Barrett ect......
i think it's partly cuz of their history, and also the fact that UK is an island (they don't really want to be part of europe, they don't want to be americanized...even if they're the 51eme state... )
and they're the cradle of pop/rock music...their roots are very important for them...and that's not bad actually...be proud of your roots.....but i think some should be more open minded sometimes about music from other countries...
for eg, teens should not listen to the CRAPPY NME who tells you what to love/hate that week...music should not be a bussiness...
of course, i'm not talking about you guys...well it's quite obvious...if not, you would not be on this board, hehehe...but the majority of english peeps i know are fond of brit music... and sometimes old french like Gainsbourg and françoise hardy, stuff like that...but except that they can be quite hermetic about the rest.......
but at least you can talk about music......over here, people have no taste at all in music and that is so sad, it makes me sick! _________________
