There seems to be quite a bit (well, a tiny bit) of debate about who, and who is not AntiFolk. So what does everyone think? What should one 'do' to be AntiFolk? How can one stop being AntiFolk? I always thought AntiFolk was more a reference to a scene, rather than a style. Educate me! |

I always wandered too what anti folk is really about, i see it more like a scene too.....i guess playing acoustic is the first thing to do, i also always assumed that anti folk have a lot to do with the DIY music, but to be honest i can't really see the difference between folk and anti folk ! Maybe anti flok means folk plus punk tunes, i don't know, educate me too ! _________________ http://uberaffe.bandcamp.com |

I like to think of antifolk as misanthropy, but that is a silly answer... |

Certainly some acts like joie dead blond girlfriend take this more angry approach but then in so many other antifolk artists they opt for a child like innocence to their music.
when I first discovered antifolk I heard the whole acoustic punk discription which seemed to fit at the time, but it didn't last long, and the more you get in to the scene and discover all these great acts the more I've resigned myself to thinking of antifolk as a scene more then a genre. I do see something in the music which links antifolk artists together I guess in the subject matter they write about but beyond that I cant label it.
I hate having to try to anwser this question when Im telling people about this music I like called 'anti-folk' does everyone have the same trouble? _________________

No, sorry it was actually a really bad joke, playing on the meaning of 'folk' as people... I don't really think that antifolk is all about angry psycho songs!
Yeah, I have the same problem though, Will, because if I start talking about folk music people assume i mean fiddles and accordions and morris dancing etc... |

i think its really just the new wave of folk tunes. taking folk as an influence and then running in whichever direction suits the artist. _________________ dont't crap out |

That sounds like a reasonable discription of anti folk to me terricloth _________________

Post-modern pop music without any pretense.
That's it.
It came to me last night. I think that statement is the most important contribution of my life[/b] |
