42 years on this Earth, none of which I lived particularly far from Coventry, and I don't believe I have ever stepped foot into Coventry prior to 30th August 2024. I possibly once visited to watch Coventry v Cardiff City play football (soccer!) but if I did, we didn't go into the city centre, I just travelled straight to the ground and back..
Anyway, the City Coventry itself wasn't memorable, although I did enjoy participating in Coventry parkrun the day after the gig. My physio has advised me to pause running, but I powerwalked the 5km in under 41 minutes. I was pleased to finish quicker than some people jogging! I also enjoyed a delicious pork, stuffing, apple sauce and gravy roll in Coventry market for under £3 the day after the gig before I got my train home. We don't get those prices in London / Essex. The greatest thing in England is indeed the food.
Despite Coventry being nothing special, the venue was amazing. A really cool small venue on the outskirts of the city centre.
After arriving late for David Cronenburg's Wife in Hertford and only catching (and loving) the final two songs, I made sure I arrived for the full set this time. They are brilliant, and I will be sure to arrive early to see them on the other dates of the tour that I can get to.
I was delighted although unsurprised that there were no repeated songs in the Jeffrey Lewis setlist from Hertford. Songs I remember, in no particular order:
Unknown title about being bad at keeping plants alive -Black thumb /Green thumb !?!?
Unknown title about supporting Kamala Harris - influenced by Karma Chameleon by Culture Club
Untitled song about frogs
My girlfriend doesn’t worry
Depression despair
The River
Water Leaking, Water Moving
Alphabet
Gatsby (film)
Star Wars (film)
Cuban missile crisis (film)
I wanna do something illegal with Amy Rose Speigel (I love this song and was pleasantly surprised to hear if in the set, I suspect this isn't a regular on the setlist)
You’re invited
Heavy heart (final song of the night, I was so happy this was played as I've been listening recently to Jeffrey Lewis's Peel session and this was one of the highlights of the session).
Jeffrey Lewis always surrounds himself with talented musicians, but this lineup (Jeffrey, Mallory, Kait, Brent) is probably the strongest lineup of Jeffrey's rotating band that I have seen. Brent is powerhouse on drums and we all love to see a drummer performing backing vocals. The looping violin of Mallory adds a lot to the songs, and the double female vocals work really well. Kait is probably the best bass player I've seen in Jeffrey's bands (and they've all been great). |
