This Velvet Underground song, reminds me of "Together we form Jeff" in a way and "No LSD tonight"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ni1xblCi1LA

and I could definitely see JL covering this live

"Ever Since You Told Me That You Love Me (I'm A Nut)"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDuatttvwak&t=1459shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDuatttvwak&t=1459s

Do these remind you of JL's style? Do you have some songs that remind you of JL?

I kind of listen to Jeff because he isn’t like my other favourite music, it’s weird.
Where I place it in my head is dependent on what era. The early stuff reminds me of beat poetry and the Leonard Cohen idea of writing honest personal things and settling it to music. Some of it is punky and some are like well crafted pop songs, it’s hard to put the whole career into one box. I will have to think some more about this. When I play it I enjoy it for what it is and don’t really think of anyone else.

I agree with Helen, there's nothing quite like Jeffrey's style of music I listen to! I guess Kimya Dawson comes closest...

I kind of feel that if I’ve got a Jeff Lewis I don’t need a poor mans version, so look to other places for my other favourite music. I have different moods all the time so need a selection of genres to deal with them. That being said if I put Jeff as singer songwriter then there are loads of them that I like, I guess it depends how far you stretch the genre.
I loved kimya live but find her records difficult to get into.

Jeff's style is very unique. I have heard people compare him to Daniel Johnston and early Mountain Goats but I don't think those are very fair comparisons.

Helen, I feel the same way about Kimya but I love Remember That I Love You. As for her other records, I feel like it would take some time.

Here's the stuff I was learning from the most in the early years of making up songs! I think these sound the most like what I think I sound like but maybe I'm wrong!
Daniel Johnston (of course!!)
Donovan (like, Fairytale, Catch the Wind, For Little Ones)
early Palace stuff
acoustic/early Sebadoh stuff
Jonathan Richman
Prewar Yardsale
Whip - Song Song
Professor Louie (my rapping uncle)
Tom Lehrer
the first three Camper Van Beethoven albums
the first five Violent Femmes albums
Yo La Tengo stuff from 1990-1997
early acoustic Bob Dylan, especially the Bootleg Series Volume 1 stuff
the first three Phil Ochs albums
the first three Pearls Before Swine albums
Woody Guthrie
I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff, but to MY ears these are the things that are the most similar to what i was TRYING to do... but probably failing to do... anyway these were all very inspirational in the early years of realizing I could make up songs on guitar, learning how to play, playing open mics, making tapes, and making up songs with my brother.

That's the thing - your music has evolved over the years too. So I guess by now you're probably the biggest influence on your own music, haha!

Fun to see how many of these influences you mention are stuff my dad listens to. I guess it makes sense that he immediately loved your music when I showed it to him! I guess I myself don't listen to much like Jeffreys music, but I did grow up listening to a lot of it and it just sounds familiar to my ears Smile

Not sure what exactly is wrong about it but I meant the music Jeff listed in his reply. Sorry, non-native English speaker Wink
