I played the Brooklyn Folk Fest this past Sunday with Peter Stampfel, and because I was playing the festival I got in free to see Michael Hurley, my third time seeing him, he was solo, playing electric guitar. I bought a vinyl copy of his album Ancestral Swamp and I'm enjoying it a lot. I also bought four of his comic books! They had a deal "four comics for $20" so I got the pack. The comics are so weird and funny, some of them were drawn by him in the 60s, and 70s, and 80s.
If you don't know Michael Hurley's stuff you should really check him out!
These are some great Michael Hurley albums:
Armchair Boogie
Hi Fi Snock Uptown
Long Journey
First Songs
Parsnip Snips

And to know more about him, there's always wikipedia...

What stuff did you hear? Curious which stuff you liked, maybe your recommendations for a good starting point with Michael Hurley would be different than mine!

I started with Armchair Boogie which was great as I was listening to a lot of John Fahey and Harry Taussig. I then moved on to Watertower which, in my opinion, was a little better. The songs were catchier and better produced which was nice to hear. The song "I Paint a Design" is brilliant!

I've never heard the Watertower album!
That one and Blue Navigator are both sort of well-regarded Michael Hurley albums that I've never heard or seen... rare/out-of-print I think.

I've seen them online but they're just too expensive. Maybe one day....
