I'm really excited and happy about the new music I've been working on with Peter Stampfel the past few months... I hope we can record a new album really soon.
I'm booking a bunch of shows with the new line-up! Here's some of what we've got coming up, in NYC and in the UK, hopefully adding more shows soon!

Sunday March 10 - NYC - The Jeffrey Lewis & Peter Stampfel Band at Mercury Lounge! 7pm

THEN planning a UK tour for May-June...

Ohhh, I wish I could afford going to the UK! All the nice people seem to go there, and often continue not to visit mainland Europe...

I would love to try to bring the Stampfel/Lewis band to Europe!
I'm going to email some promoters and see if something might be possible, maybe this summer.
It's hard to travel with a 5-piece band though! Nobody will do it unless I can promise them a certain amount of money, and of course I don't want to make them sleep on floors too much either... Peter is 75 years old... so every show has to pay a certain minimum amount to cover these costs and that means I can only book shows in areas where I'm confident of having at least 100 people at the show.
When I'm touring in my own project I'm not so concerned about this stuff... I'll sleep anywhere and play for anybody! That makes it easier to book a tour!
Anyway hopefully I'll be back out in Europe some where, some time this year, not sure yet of anything.

Hoping to see you somewhere in the east midlands!
Nottingham or leicester would be great!
was a great show with no curfew at Lock 42 in Leicester last year.

Are you planning on coming to Brighton on this one? Maybe Shhh promotions (Scott and Dillon) would be able to help.

Dang, I just posted a whole reply about the tour-booking but it somehow disappeared...I hit "submit" and got a message that said "no post category specified" or something like that and the message vanished!

Anyway, the short answer is yes, I'm hoping to fit in both Brighton and Leicester in the UK tour, talking to some clubs and promoters, more info soon!

I'd better get in the car up to Hay on Wye then, oh and take some extra money for the book shops. I will do my best anyway. xx

You know you're getting old when you don't know your local venue....
And the last gig you went to was Jeffs as well, on the last tour...

I'm really excited for this. Would it be rude to make a request/suggestion while you're still limbering up (a requestion?): I'd love to hear you all playing Low Down Dog, from Alleged In Their Own Time. That album is perfect. Have you ever played that one together?
Also, Random Canyon and Romping Through the Swamp... I just heard the Dave Van Ron versions of those recently, and it reminded me how many great songs Stampfel has had a hand in.

Those are all great ideas!
What I did on the last tours with Stampfel was that I looked through all the records of his that I have and picked out a bunch of his material that I thought would be great to learn and include in the tour repertoire, then Peter picked out some of those that he wanted to do so they got learned/included. I want to do the same for the upcoming shows, and pick some different songs, so that we do some different ones from the last tour. Maybe I can even get some of the great Rounders songs that Peter wasn't personally involved in writing, because that expands the possibilities too.
Or some Michael Hurley stuff or other related material that's part of Peter's musical "family".

I don't think I've ever heard those Van Ronk versions! What are they on?

Romping Through The Swamp is on 'Dave Van Ronk And The Hudson Dusters', which I don't think has been reissued, but also on the compilation 'The Mayor of Macdougal Street' CD.

'Van Ronk' from 1971 is great! It has two songs credited to Peter: Random Canyon and Fat Old John (which I hadn't heard before). And a great version of Bird on the Wire and I Think It's Going to Rain Today (by Randy Newman)!

Cool, thanks for the tips! I'll keep my eyes peeled for those... I often check the Van Ronk section of used LP bins, those records are often findable pretty cheap (IF they turn up). Not all of them are great, but usually there's at least a couple really good tracks on each.
Same goes for Tom Paxton - except for the first two Tom Paxton albums which are both completely EXCELLENT and should be both findable and cheap: "Rambling Boy" and "Ain't That News". I love those albums, and if you're a fan of early/mid 60s NYC folk stuff (pre-electric Dylan, Van Ronk, Phil Ochs, Fred Neil, Joan Baez, etc) you will love those albums.
(actually there's an even earlier Tom Paxton LP, a small live release from 1963, but it's very rare and I've never heard it!)

I am going to the Cardiff date, it turns out the venue has changed names, I was confused for a bit. Anyone else got any tickets or planning to go to any of them? xxxx
