With great sadness I have to report the passing of Dashan Coram of Huggabroomstik and Secret Salamander, a dear friend and collaborator and light of the NYC musical landscape. Huge hugs to everybody that knew him, all around the world.

There's a collection of photos here:

May he rest in peace.
I really love the sound he gave to the songs he produced, he also has a real great voice and an original way of singing.
Gone too soon...

I found a bunch of secret salamander songs on last fm, been listening to it a lot, it's so good, so imaginative and fresh, some songs makes me real sad though knowing he's gone, it seems that he reocrded a lot of things with a lot of different people, there's also a real nice live video on you tube, such a shame that he's gone, he had so much to share, and he sounds like a really nice human.

That's young to die.
I'm sorry Jeff, thinking of you xxx

Interesting that this string just came back up to the top, because Jon Glovin was just over at my apartment a few minutes ago (he's a regular on the NY antifolk scene, and sometimes found in Berlin), he was searching for Secret Salamander CDs, he's trying to put all of them on Bandcamp but nobody seems to know how many exist! There's no official list and there were a lot of releases, I guess. I never paid that much attention to them, I had a couple of the albums, but I never thought about whether I had all of them or whatever. I usually paid more attention to the official Huggabroomstick releases, some of that stuff is very good (have you heard the double album Time & Space? That's a good one).

Huggabroomstik were so wonderful. Everything I want from rock and roll.
I played at their Huggabroomstock in 2011. It was the only time I met Dashan (maybe in the days surrounding it too). He was so kind and supportive. He left a big impression, even more so from his music. I hope Jon manages to find it all.
I always loved the Ultimate and Alternate Huggabroomstik. I think Ultimate might still be around for free on their website, if it's still up.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'm going to dig that one out and listen to it tonight! (if my old CDR of it is still playable!)

Huggabroomstick are great, i like his solo stuff better though, more touching, nothing beats the feelings that comes out an homemade song most of the time. You feel blue so you grab your guitar and start struming and sharing your blues, it's all in the moment.

Yeah... by the way have I already posted about the 1970 Lou Reed home demo tape? It's really interesting to hear Lou Reed as a lo-fi home-recording guy, if he didn't have his whole other career, maybe he would have just been a guy making these lo-fi tapes of songs at home like Dashan, or like Daniel Johnston (or like so many of us!).
You can read about it and download the whole 12-song tape here:
http://ahistoryofundergroundrecording.blogspot.com/2011/09/lou-reed-acoustic-demos-1970.html

Alternatively there's a bunch of the songs individually posted on Youtube, like this one:

I'm downloading right now, can't wait to hear this.
There are the toronto tapes on here by Keith Richards, my father made me a copy of this a couple of years ago, it's really good also. I love Keith's singing.
