May I second that! Wishing you a very happy birthday Helen. Thanks for posting on here as you do, I really enjoy hearing what you have to say and am in awe of your openess. If you were just across the water I'd be able to take you out for a cup of tea and slice of cake, next time you are in Bristol or vice versa Karen xx

What a treat from Kris, I thought i'd woken up when I first heard the Sugarcubes when I about 15 years old.

I live in Bristol too, can I invite myself along to this tea party?

Could this tea party idea gain momentum then - what say you Helen as you would be our most honorary guest? Sourcing good cake is pretty straightforward (hey I even won a cup for my domestic capabilities) but as both Helen and AFB have already professed to have moments of social shyness when it comes to wanting to speak to interesting unknown others, then my natural leaning in this direction might mean that we are in need of extending the invite to some other fearless, garrulous types. Or perhaps there's a good gin house that also does a nice line in cake.

I think Hendricks really managed to reinvent gin with the addition of cucumber, shame it was so scarce when having a hangover didn't matter. I'm still lamenting the missed Bompass and Parr event allowing participants to wander (or should that be collapse)? in a dense cloud of breathable Hendricks vapours, imbibing through eyes and lungs.

I'm inclined to think Gin is deserving of its very own thread, but then perhaps I should find myself a nice carousers blog!

Aw I'm so overwhelmed, this is a lovely surprise, thank you everyone! I could cry! You are so beautiful.
I don't go to Bristol much but I'll certainly give you a shout. I drink gin and tonic too, Although I'm not a big drinker these days, I think I've had less than 10 drinks in the past year and a half...but nearly all of them were gin.
I have had a nice birthday, quiet, I didn't go anywhere except Sainsburys and I didn't do anything in the house except housework and watching documentaries but I did have 3 visitors and a gorgeous collection of pink cards and sweet gifts. And now I'm 28 and it's all ok.
Thank you all again you're all so kind xxxx

I was tempted to start a new thread and then saw Helen's reply and figured we can just let this thread evolve into a gin-focused conversation now the birthday has passed Wink

Are there any dedicated gin bars around our parts? There's a couple of rum bars...

I'm rarely out these days, and given the ephemeral nature of half the eateries/drinking holes in Bristol, I suspect my knowledge is more relevant to pre- 2006 although I am told that Hausbar, Upper Belgrave Road is a good place for cocktails, Amoeba are also hosting a Mad Hatters Hendricks party this coming weekend, Sunday, 3rd April, I will be sad not to be there but the big plus is that I'll be away having been to see Comus the night before.

Bramley and Gage apparently make a great local gin (they are Thornbury based) but I have become very attached to Hendricks. B&G won an award for their sloe gin which reminds me I have some which needs rescuing from the dark recesses of my wardrobe, take it the moths haven't drunk that whilst snacking on my woollens.

Should I ever become rich and frivolous enough to stock all of the below then this recipe looks pretty sublime:

* 50 mls Gin
* 10 mls Creme de Violette
* 10 mls St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
* 10 mls Home Made Lavender Syrup
* dash of Orange Flower Water
* dash of Rose Water
* 20 mls Fresh Lemon Juice

Obviously may pose some discomfort issues when ordering as a bloke.

Sorry readers who have no interest whatsoever in gin ramblings, will try harder on the music front in future - still stuck in a perpetual Village Thing loop though and you've already heard about that.

I hope that you first days into being 28 have been bright Helen!

In Cardiff, it's all about drinking Bombay Sapphire in the Buffalo Bar in the city. I haven't done it for years but it was good when I did.
Being 28 is alright so far. Today I stayed in the house dusting all day because it was raining and I felt tired and not like socialising.
xxxx

At least they don't chug beer, piss in the can and then crush it on their foreheads?
