This should be in my mailbox when I get home from work today. Beyond excited. It should be available in stores(not sure which ones) tomorrow but, I pre-ordered mine from Beggars. Once I get home and give it a spin, I'll post my comments on it but, as far as I can tell, everyone loves it. |

Here's the thing regarding the new album, as far as I'm concerned. Given that Jeff has been playing most of the songs live for some time (3 years ago that he was first playing Pig and Minnie the Moocher??), I just didn't get that rush of excitement when I first heard the CD. It sounds mighty fine and all that, but there was nothing to bowl me over because I already felt I knew the songs already. I'm not sure that the new arrangements add much to the quality of the songs either - in fact in some cases I think I prefer other versions that I've got to the new "studio" ones (I'm thinking "Whistle Past the Graveyard" and "Slogans" especially).
I know this is true of any artist who works/re-works songs live before recording them definitively, but it explains why I'm not excited to play Em Are I too often at the moment. Now that live version of "What If I Couldn't Take it Any More" that was posted here a week or two back, on the other hand - can't stop playing it!
Not sure I see any way round this problem for the foreseeable future, either - unless a) Jeff records and releases songs much quicker or b) I stop seeing him live so much.
Um. |

Well, I haven't heard most of these songs before. I've seen him live once. I live near Dallas and he's only played near here once in his entire touring history. And I love the new record.
One of my favorite bands, Harvey Danger released a new record in 2005 and before it came out, I had scoured the internet and found live recordings and once I got the record I was like "I already know all these song." and I was let down, so I know how you feel but, it didn't diminish the album to me. |
