Well, last night I finally went to my first Jeffrey Lewis gig.
He was the support for Darren Hanlon at the Petersham Town Hall in Sydney.
This is the set list (from memory):
To Be Objectified
Chelsea Hotel Oral Sex Song
As I Wandered Across the Land
Systematic Death
Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror
Roll Bus Roll
The Complete History of Communism Part 3
Thinking about it, it’s exactly 4 years since I discovered Mr Lewis. I heard the Chelsea Hotel Oral Sex Song in the early hours of the morning on Triple R while I was in Melbourne for the comedy festival, and the comedy festival is about to start next week. But that’s by the by.
It was worth the wait – I got both Chelsea Hotel and Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror so I’m a very happy little vegemite. Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror was a request from another fan in the audience, so thank you whoever asked for it. Jeff wasn’t sure it would work here - he thought there were too many New York references. But it went down a treat.
He did his adopting an attitude spiel between the first two songs and Corey Gray from Car Crashlander (who’s in Darren Hanlon’s band for this tour) joined him for the last two songs.
I even worked up the courage to talk to Jeff after the show, and he was lovely. And I don’t think I made too much of a dick of myself (which is always a worry when I try to talk to someone I’m a big fan of).
So all in all a top night. Darren Hanlon’s set was great as well. I’ll have to juggle some shifts at work, but I can’t wait for Jeff’s solo gig in Sydney in a week and a bit. |

I'd say about 300. But then, I'm not great at guesstimating that sort of thing |

Lucy, i was there too! He played a great show! I only wish Jeff's set could have been longer.
It was also my first Jeff Lewis gig - I was so amazed when I heard that he was coming to Sydney! |

ha - at my first jeff gig I travelled for an hour and a half. when I got back to the car, my tire was flat and my spare I'd accidentally left at home. my breakdown cover wasn't that good either... I had to beg my dad to come and bring me a tire... so embarassing, i felt like a 12 year old kid who'd really disappointed his parents. Ah well - at least it wasn't a boring evening |

It was way too short Clamstock. I'm just happy that he lived up to my expectations, that doesn't always happen. I'm hoping we'll get a longer set at the Hopetoun.
Wow, AFB! The night of your first gig sounds like it was dreadful, apart from the music. |
