Not really a review just a quick over view,
It was great seeing Nic, Rhiannon and Morgan again (Anyone who hasn't heard Morgans new album should listen to it first chance they get its amazing!! - I hear the tour takes them via Kieron, Dav & Ema and Moe have fun guys!!)
Open act was a half hour set from the new york anti folk scene Phoebe Kreutz who I love, I've been wanting to see her live for ages and missed the last time she was in England. songs I remember her playing that were,
Oh Elizabeth I
The ballad of throat culture
Bull run beer run
song to make you cry
ass song
Next up was the excellent excellent Wave Pictures, as with Jeff and the Jackels it was my 3rd time in a little over a week seeing the Wave Pictures and they just get better and better!
Finally The JLB took the stage and played a high energy set so great it might even have surpassed the great one they played in Brighton last week! (which is saying something!) I don't know what it is but they seem re-energised and are playing the best shows they've played in a while and thats not knocking the other shows I've seen them play in recent months to say a return to form implies theres been a dip so I'll say it's raising the bar.
They opened with a song a didn't know almost as a cue to tell people to get into the room, then proceeded to play,
Broken Heart
Whistling past the graveyard
East river
Arrow
Wait it out
A low budget detective flick
Don't let the record label take you out to lunch
The Herman Dune song
Moving
Roll bus roll
Art land
I ain't thick it's just a trick
Systematic death
End result
Walls
The history of communism - Korea ( low budget vid)
Don't be upset
Water
Back when I was 4
No LSD tonight
Man with the golden arm
They always knew
Texas
Encore
Jeff came out and spoke two poems for an encore, one about the British monetary system and the Ramen song.
for the Crass songs, Helen's part on keyboard and vocals was done by Dave's girl friend Fletcher who done a great job. (maybe next tour it'll be done by Jacks girl friend )
All in all, a great night!! _________________

FYI - the opening track was a cover of Pink Floyds "Set The Controls For The Heart Of the Sun" - a tribute to the recent death of their keyboardist, Rick Wright ? A nice touch by the band.

That show was the best I've ever seen them, it made me hyperventillate! _________________ "It's all easier said than done and it's not even easy to say." |
