They exist in France but people give them junk so that's all they ever have. The good things they want to get rid off, people just sell at second hand stores or ebay...
My dad worked for Emmaus & The Salvation Army when I was a kid (he ran 3 homeless shelters in Paris in the 80s-90s) and people usually left tons of junk & horrible clothes by the door. It was pathetic because most of it was in such a bad condition it was just thrown away & only a few things were sent to the association's shops or offered to the homeless directly in "vestiaires" (small warehouses where they could come pick up clean clothes for free).
At Xmas there was a story in the news of how some charity shop workers panicked because in an anonymous bag of donations they found a gun! They called the police and it was all over the news over there (in the Southwest).
I know I always visit the charity shops whever I am in England. My grandparents live in Torquay (Devon) and there are at least 4 or 5 charity shops on the main street (The Heart Foundation, Oxfam, Pets In Need of Vets <-my favorite, a couple of old people's foundations and another one I can't remember). I get tons of books, some cds & other things there all the time. When I finish a book & know I won't read it again I give it to them to sell. It's great because you get things you want (but don't want to spend a fortune on new) and then money goes to something useful...
I went to San Francisco in 1999 & they had some cool stuff there, in charity shops & second hand stores... |

That's interesting, I suspect that charity shops in Britain are also losing out because it is so easy now to sell things on eBay rather than give them away. I think the quality is linked to the are - the better-off it is the better the goods tend to be.
In the town where I work there's at least six of these shops, and I buy stuff (books, CDs, vinyl) most weeks. I see it really as giving a donation to charity, but I get cool stuff in return. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/arhythmicnick |

Ry Cooder - My Name is Buddy. This album tells the story of a hobo cat that wanders across America, looking at the idiosyncracies that make up the nation, along with his best friend, Lefty the mouse.
Also bought an Astrud Gilberto cd, which I'm yet to listen to.
And related, I bought the film Alice's Restaurant, based on the brilliant Arlo Guthrie song. |

oh man the new Shellac record is out? I wish I had a job.
my last purchases were from the Kill Rock Stars sale. all vinyl. I got:
Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
Hella - The Devil Isn't Red
Erase Errata - Nightlife
and also
Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out LP
and the Dig Me Out tee shirt to replace my old one which is too worn out and has holes all over it. _________________ http://myspace.com/theimpossiblebuildings |

I bought my Shellac on CD. I know it should never be done, but I was just impressed to see it, and was too keen! I haven't given it a good listen yet, but it rocks hard of course, but there's something so relaxing about it - unlike their other releases i think - quite simply - ace |

Do you like at mount zoomer?
I think mine was Paul and Linda McCartney's Ram on vinyl for two dollars at the Maxwell street market in Chicago. Amazing album!
The last new album I bought was also a vinyl and I would highly recommend it: Some Stopping, Some Racing by The Headlights, an indie sensation that is sweeping the nation from my home town of Urbana-Champaign, IL.
The record is only 12 dollars! and you get 3 free 320 kbps mp3 downloads of it to boot.

scroll down in the new releases
I've listened to it for over half a year now and I'm still not tired of it. _________________ "It's all easier said than done and it's not even easy to say." |
