Hi everyone. I don't normally join boards but I thought you might benefit from my tabbing of Jeff Lewis' song "Gold" from his "It's those who've cracked..." album, seeing as it took me bloody ages to work it out myself.
It sounds quite complicated when you listen to it, you might find it easier to first learn to play to bass line and then the higher notes, and then put them together, that's what I did. p.s: the higher notes are not "spot on" seeing as there is some variation, but i think this tab sounds pretty damn good.
For those in a hurry: it's all focused around Em. vaguely
When I Got to the Gold- en__Ci- ty..

___G------------------------------------------------------------
___D----------0-------------------------------------------------
___A------------------2-----0-----------------------0h2p0-----
___E--3------------------------------0-------------------------0-0
That's the whole shape of the song really, although it's nice to end on a :
e--------------------------------0---------------------
B--0h3---3-0--1----3---------0--------------------
G--------------------------------0--------------------
D----------0----------0--------2-------------------- (let ring)
A----------------2--------------2--------------------
E--3----------------------------0--------------------
I've tried to make this as straightforward as possible, any confusion please PM me. H means "hammer-on", P means "pull-off", they are typed just before the notes they are referring to. Have fun and happy picking! Katy
pps: please excuse underscores, i've tried to space it so to words and timing relate, so that there's more of a guide for timing, but it removes extra spaces automatically. hence the underscors everywhere to keep things in the right place. grrr |

Hi Dav, Will and Kieran! Wow I was surprised to see such a quick (and friendly) responses. Well I hope the tab is useful to someone, it certainly is a lovely song to play, it's so fun to make that plunky sound. I don't really play that much any more (I've managed to play guitar for an embarrassing amount of years without ever really getting good) but this is one song that is stuck now in my memory for whenever I do actually pick a guitar up.
If anyone has any suggestions or tabs for any other very finger-picking based songs, I'd love to hear about it... there is a song by Jim Flynn on the "New York Anti-folk Volume 1" CD that I'd really like to play, but I haven't been able to crack it yet. But yeah! thanks for having me here anyhoo |

Oh yeah, and Kieran, this tab really isn't as arkward as it looks. As i say, start off playing it just with the lower four bass strings, then once you're comfortabke with the rhythm, you can add in the higher bits (play those bits with your 1st and 4th fingers). I nearly managed to teach this to my boyfriend and he's a complete non-guitarist, experience counts for nothing, just go for it!! if the strings hurt your fingers (if you're playing on acoustic) you could always just whack on a capo and play in a higher key for practising. |

Thanks for the tips Kate. I shall print it out now and have a go when I get home! I've been playing for about three years now, almost every day, sometimes for like two or three hours a night; more at weekends (drives my girlfriend nuts!), so no worries with painful fingers. It's just my right hand that is sleepy-slow and doesn't work properly! |
