I think R B R is actually Don't Be Upset. My awful handwriting!
Keithos - do you remember the setlist?

Roll Bus Roll - of course! Funny hearing Jeff Lewis singing it, I've only really heard Nick's cover of it! Cheers for the other amendments, too. Was a tres cool gig, huh? I actually liked KateGoes though, so pity me! Maybe it was just nice to hear a Brummie accent...

Yes! that's the one. I took a few photos, so when I get the film developed, I'll hopefully get them posted. I also recorded Man With The Golden Arm with my phone, but the file size is too big to email Sad Maybe I'll be able to find an internet café with an infrared port. I don't even know if it sounds any good...

Here's a wee review of the night:

Me and my girlfriend (that's E-M-M-A, not ema from the board!) got there at about half eight. Doors still shut so we go off to a swanky bar to while away some time. Drinks finished, and we make it in. No bands have been on so far, so I wander across to the merch table. Jack, the lovely fella that he is, gets up and shakes my hand, as appears to be the tradition whenever I see him! I buy his new album, Tapes From The Crypt (about bloody time!) and a Jack Lewis t-shirt (well, I already have a Jeff Lewis one). Just as I'm about to ask him how things are, how the tour went and plans for the future, KateGoes starts up. Kate is a lovely wee girl from England’s second city of Birmingham, with a mightily thick Brummie drawl. Not everyone's cup of tea I'm sure, but I have certainly come to appreciate it! The discordant key and tempo changes of their songs reminded me of Adam Green, circa Gemstones, without the unnecessary vulgarity, and more laughter. The time passes and most people have a smile on their face.

Next up, Jeff. Totally awesome. As they always should be and always are. I've already listed the set (with Keithos' help), but it was fandabadozy. Creeping Brain was certainly the slickest low-budget video, as the Bongo Club appears to have it's own projector. And it had him on gee-tar for it too. A few songs later and Jeff has cued up History of Communism - China for the projector. Dave and Jack are playing some fast stuff in preparation for this song, only for jeff to start with gentle, and far slower guitar work. It could be that there are two different versions of song that they play for this, because Jack flashes a disgruntled look to Jeff at the prospect have to slow the tempo right down. Dave flails his arms in disgust. Brotherly love, eh?! But soon all is forgotten, and the story is underway. I have to say, it's nice wee history of China; even Emma seems to appreciate it, despite being Communism's smallest fan! The set almost ends with a cover of the Richard Hell classic Destiny Street (thanks Keithos) which I assume must be the Back When I Was 31 song Hamlet mentioned. It seemed to mostly talk of retrospective views of one's life. The band appears to finish, but then play one more song - it's a pretty half-hearted encore, and I'm not really sure if the boys got that into it. But nevertheless, a great gig! And with about 12 songs, one of the longest I've seen by them.

Last up - Misty's Big Advneture. I first saw Grandmaster Gareth when the Antifolk All-stars came to Birmingham several years ago (Jeff formed part of the tour). It was nice to have Jeff and Misty's playing a gig together again. The Misty's set was grand, though seemed somewhat lacklustre to how I remembered them from the first few times I saw them. I was to the side of the stage though, and therefore behind the main speakers a bit. New songs were great fun, though the set list was a bit thin of tracks from the first album - my personal favourite. Never mind, all in a top night!

(Except for the toilets breaking halfway through and the subsequent but thankfully only temporary closure of the bar).

Jack's cd was the only new thing. There was Fuff/Guff 1-4 (or was it 1-5?) and I bought Fuff#1 at the end of the night. As well as Jack's tshirts, there were some Jeffrey Lewis and the Creeping Brains Tshirts, which I guess are the new ones. I've not seen them before, leastways...

The CD is brilliant! I wore my Jack Lewis tshirt that I bought at the gig last night and realised it has been signed by Jack. Maybe they all have? I don't care, mines feels special, haha!

I have to say, the highlight of the gig for me was Man with the Golden Arm and Roll Bus Roll.
