For my all-time top 5 comic books... well, all these top 5 lists are hard to whittle down but here's 5 that are favorites of mine.

Watchmen - Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons
Understanding Comics - Scott McCloud
Eightball (the whole series) - Daniel Clowes
Peepshow - Joe Matt
Ed the Happy Clown - Chester Brown

It's hard not to include so many other Alan Moore comics, any list of the best ever comic books would really need to include Moore's run on Swamp Thing, as well as his V For Vendetta, Miracleman, From Hell, and A Small Killing.
The whole Sandman series by Neil Gaiman too... But I'm starting to go too long, I have to keep it to the 5 above!
Oh but what about the incredible work of Joe Sacco... like his "Safe Area Gorazde"...
Well, the list goes on and on I suppose.
And all white men; what's up with that.

I don't have a large enough comic book culture to make a top 5.
Peepshow was so great and made me laught a lot.
Eightball was also really great
Understanding comics was really instructive
i've never read Ed the happy clown.

I guess my top 5 would be mostly Alan Moore comics but i guess we can make a top 5 for that.

I really love the first issues of the silver surfer saga, so that would be in my top also.

I was going to mention those Silver Surfer issues actually! That's Fantastic Four #48-49 I believe... those are so crazy. But I also love the 70s Silver Surfer stuff with John Buscema art...

Wow, this is a tricky one, so, without too much thinking:

Blammo - Noah Van Sciver (a series that just keeps getting better with every issue)
Fuff - Jeff Lewis (the first real single issue series I read and it felt like it was made for me)
Paul at Home - Michel Rabagliati (a cartoonist's cartoonist!)
The Push Man and other stories / Goodbye - Yoshihiro Tatsumi (Unbelievable work)
One More Year - Simon Hanselmann (always hilarious and horrendous)

Okay and I can't not mention Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel, those comics are still so underrated, but really, what comic isn't?

Blammo by Noah Van Sciver is so good! But it is hard to find the issues, I have only been able to find about 3 of them... the others are always sold out, it seems... Every time I go to a comic store I look for them.

Kilgore Books just published a collection of Blammo #1-5 (for hardcore fans only, not his best work) and plan to do a second collection soonish. Issues 9 and 10 at the cream of the crop.

Thanks for the tip... but how bad could they be? It's always interesting to see an artist's early work, in any case!

It's just not the best place to start for a new reader I guess I meant. It definitely shows glimpses of the talent that is coming ahead and a fun read. He's got a 400+ page graphic novel coming out 2022 too! He never stops!
