Wow, somebody tried to write down the very-difficult-to-hear spoken word part at the end of Syd Barrett's "No Man's Land" song! This spoken part is buried in the mix so that it's almost impossible to hear what he's saying. I recently listened to this album and I started wondering if there was a way online to perhaps hear an isolated track of JUST the spoken part, with no music, to hear what he's saying... and I found this lyric transcription of the end-part, hard to know if it's accurate... Maybe Dav knows more about this!
Tell me, Tell me
Don't, if you?
Stop that, that just upset yourself
Listen, Listen, if you ask in person
I'll stick to the joke, you know
yelling and sceaming, help me!
All that in the afternoon, for that matter
So she'd asked if we could stay with Grace
Maybe a day or a couple of weeks
You know, until Tuesday
Pick up my mushrooms
Clean my skin up
Pick up some tissue
Pick up the production
It's all fine! you know
And she served the wine
and cups for 3 or 4 people
And that nonsense
Gracie do her song, heavily spaced
All the pink shine on war
Explodes from beneath
Don't you would rather
Be out the front door sometime
Long ago instead of being
Cooped up like a catched rat? |

Nice find! I've read a couple of topics about this on the past.
i'll listen to it tomorrow while reading the lyrics.
Did it sounds accurate to you jeffrey? _________________ http://uberaffe.bandcamp.com |

I just tried listening while looking at the lyric sheet, it seems to be accurate sometimes, but other times it seems to not be right... and then there are other times when it is so impossible to hear the vocal clearly that there's no way to know.
If the master tapes still exist they should really do a new mix of the song, with that spoken part much louder... or they should just release the spoken part as a completely isolated track, so Syd fans could be able to finally hear what the heck he's saying, after 4 or 5 decades of wondering what exactly all that muttering is! |

it would be cool, in the same time i kinda like not hearing.
Where you awareof the madcat revelation in the Chapman book?
He explains that Syd sings madcat and not madcap, once you know it, it's pretty obvious. _________________ http://uberaffe.bandcamp.com |

Yeah, I have heard it that way too... the mad cat laughed... but it seems strange that Syd would allow his album to have a title that is a mistake?
This is a problem in Watchmen too, the final chapter title is quoting words from a John Cale song, but the quote is wrong if you listen to the song! |

About that madcat, i always imagined that Syd noticed the mistake but thought it was funny and didn't correct Gilmour.
About the Cale quote, i don't know the song it's from . But thanks for sharing.
Reading the book in english is so great. It's like having watching a movie with a bad french dubbing and seeing the original version after seeing it so many time. It makes me wonder all of my translated Alan Moore comics... i'll probably get me an english copy of V. _________________ http://uberaffe.bandcamp.com |

I've just listened while reading the words, as you Jeffrey, i'm pretty convinced that some of it is accurate, some of it i don't agree and the rest, well you can't hear. The song is so great. I have feeling that cool unheard stuff by Syd will surface soon... _________________ http://uberaffe.bandcamp.com |

I've read an interview in the french magazine "rock and folk" of Twink, a former friend of Syd and member of Star, explaining that Syd was playing really great until the end, but decided to quit music when a journalist wrote down that the show was shit. I guess there's a lot of legends about Syd that are just myths.
Twink also confirm that some stuff by Star was recording, but he has no idea where the tape ended up. Finger crossed.
One of the thing that i hope will surface someday is the recording of "love you" played on a 12 strings guitar by Syd, recorded by Mick Rock. _________________ http://uberaffe.bandcamp.com |

Yes, so many miracles have happened in the age of the internet, so many things that were lost have been found, there is really no telling what amazing things might still come to light. |

I don't think the lyrics are 100% accurate - but I can't offer any improvement. I think someone would have to go back to the original master tapes to be more certain.
I did quickly try and isolate the vocals using the OOPS method - but that didn't improve things. OOPS or Out-Of-Phase-Stereo is a neat method that can isolate certain sounds that are buried in the mix. You can do it very easily in Audacity the free-sound editing tool. Basically, you invert one stereo channel and mix both channels backdown to mono.
There's a few Beatles and Hendrix songs I've heard ths way and it can be quite revealing. In Purple Haze the vocals and certain guitar parts really stand out and you can hear coughs before the vocal begins. I recall that the obscure Beatles song "You Know My Name" sounds enlivened when subjected to this method, as does the song Birthday.
I'll be seeing quite a bit of Pink Floyd related acts in the coming months. I bought tickets to see Roger Water's Us & Them tour thinking this might be my last chance to see any PF songs performed by an original member, and then much-to-my-surprise, only a few weeks afterwards I managed to get a ticket to see Nick Masons Saucerful of Secrets - his new band that are focusing on early Floyd-era tracks. The RG concert was excellent, and I'm doubly excited to get to see Nick Mason playing too. |

I didn't know about that Nick Mason tour, sounds good - are you seeing them in the UK? |

I'm seeing him in the UK - but he's touring across Northern Europe too

I expect if this tour is a success they'll do more dates.
I noticed that one of Nick's band members is Guy Pratt, who guested on some later PF stuff. He's also Rick Wright's son-in-law - so its a PF-family affair. |
