According to Rough Trade the bonus track problem is fixed, so anybody using the Manhattan download code with the LP should now be getting access to those 2 bonus tracks (What i love Most in England, and Birdies in the Woods)... if it really is working...

Just logged back in to the Rough Trade download site and it works! I'm now the proud owner of 2 bonus tracks. Sweet tunes too. Thanks for sorting this out Jeff. 'Cause that stuff's important to me.

I just have to add that all that the bonus track 'All the birdies in the Wood' has jumped straight into my Jeffrey Lewis Top Ten. As an ornithologist I'd always hoped that Jeff would write an entire song about birds. Admittedly I'd rather it had a more positive vibe regarding their vocalisations. There will be some folk from the Sussex Wildife Trust in attendance at his Brighton gig this weekend. There could be a few vegan kebabs thrown if he tries to get away with this one.

All The Birdies in the Wood

All the birdies in the wood aren’t up to any good
They just chirp in every way as if they have all day.
They get up around the dawn and just turn the babble on,
Each nest from east to west has got to have its say.
I wonder what the purpose of the happy little chirpers are,
They’re really unaware that none of us will care
Like speaking at a stone or a tree that falls alone
It’s a dark and bleak cacophony of beaks out there.
If I lived in a tree or if I could flap a limb
I think that I would be a rather quiet thing
I think that it’s absurd that every loudmouthed bird
Seems determined to be heard to get the final word.
The birdies up above never learnt the value of
Keeping quiet just to listen they don’t think of all they’re missing
They talk over each other every kid and dad and mother
They think dissonance is pleasant but they don’t know it isn’t.
No rhymin’, no rhythm it’s abysmal their condition
Vocalise with all their power like they’re in a private shower
But they’re in public spaces that they share with other races
But if weather’s good, forget it, they’ll never shut their feathered faces
From species to genus, kingdom to phylum
When you hear ‘em try to sing it’s like a lunatic asylum
Disruptin’ nice surroundings with their shoutin’ up and down
They make a thousand truly clueless noises and this is the sound
(Cue tuneless whistling)
All the birdies flapping never think of what would happen
If they grew good ears like people and could really hear like we do
They’d say ‘Birds sound like chaos; wouldn’t listen if you pay us’,
They’d apologise profusely and they’d finally obey us.
They’d finally be silent, harmony would triumph,
Their loyalty would go to us and all would be melodious.
With peace in all these trees an’ birdies listening to reason
I expect that all would be much more respectable and decent.
But they’re insubordinate and they keep on rockin’ it,
They won’t stick a cork in it, they won’t stick a sock in it
Like oil with a match in it only keeps catching
And here’s all we’ll hear if they all keep on hatching.
(Cue more tuneless whistling)
