Ok, i need to stop using this forum to continuously ask about comic books, im very sorry about this, but i dont realy drink and ive mostly stopped smokeing dope now, so all my money is being immersed into the world of comic books. and its great.
recently read jeffrey browns Clumsy, thought it was a realy sweet and honest book, is the whole 'girlfriend' trilogy, as ive read it being called, worth reading? i know your a big jeff brown fan jeff L.
i realy wanna read 'be a man' which is meant to be a take on clumsy, but if he was a bit more macho, but i cant find that anywhere. what are other jeffrey brown books like?
also i recently read up on a comic series called 'local', which seems to be stories about one girls travels across america. i like travelougues, im not acctualy sure if its fiction or non fiction though. has anyone read this?

im sorry if all these comic questions are annoying. but im the very oposite to an impulse shopper. i like to make sure my money is going on somthing ill realy love!

i'm a pretty big fan of jeffrey browns comics. the girlfriend comics, clumsy, aeiou, unlikely, are good. the first one i read was "Little Things" and that got me hooked. I'd suggest reading funny misshapen body, which is his story of going through art school and deciding to draw comics. most of his comics are pretty simple drawings, which is what drew me to it at first. good stuff! spending money on comics is never a bad thing.

When you say
"i know your a big jeff brown fan jeff L. "
are you being sarcastic?
(See some other thread for confusions about sarcasm!)
I'm actually not much of a Jeffrey Brown fan, I think he's okay but I'd never consider him to be a favorite of mine, and when people ask me for comic book recommendations I would never recommend Jeffrey Brown... I just don't think the stuff of his that I've read is that impressive or original. Maybe he has some other stuff that I haven't read that is better...

But I DO love Chester Brown, maybe that's the confusion? Chester Brown's "Ed The Happy Clown" is one of my favorite comic book collections of all time, and I also love "I Never Liked You" and "Louis Riel" - his brand new book "Paying For It" is pretty good too, and so is "The Playboy," though it is somewhat of a second-rate attempt to do a Joe Matt-style confessional comic, I think, and it's not Chester's best.

"Ed The Happy Clown" has unfortunately been out of print and very difficult to find for a few years now - but I've heard it will be reprinted next year.

haha, im sorry jeff, i dont know why i had that in my head. think i did get confussed with chester brown, i remember you praising ed the happy clown in a post of yours.
Jeffrey lewis + chester brown = jeffrey brown. easy confusion!

ed the happy clown is something ive beeen meaning to look into, shame to hear its currently out of print. will have to look our for the re-print.
i see Louis Riel mentioned in alot of 'best graphic novel' lists here and there

"Louis Riel" is definitely great and worth checking out - so is "I Never Liked You" and "Paying For It" -
but all of these (and "The Playboy" too) are just Chester Brown doing NON-fiction comics. They are awesome, and his writing and drawing style are awesome, but because they are non-fiction they are similar to some other non-fiction comics you may have already read. That is why I give "Ed The Happy Clown" a much higher recommendation for Chester Brown's stuff, because that's where you can see his unique writing and drawing AND his unique fictional imagination, and it's his imagination that REALLY blows away the competition. His insane ideas are just incredible, so much fun to read, very different from anything else that I've read.

Oh yeah, there's also another mostly fictional book collection by Chester Brown - it's called "The Little Man" and it is a collection of a lot of his early weird/imaginative comics, plus some short non-fiction stuff, all from when he was starting his career in the 80s. It's totally great, even though it's his early/young stuff.

The Little Man is all i've read of Chester Brown and it is amazing. I have definitely been slacking on reading his other books and will take your recommendations Jeff! I need to pick up some new comics soon, but I've still yet to see a good comic shop in my area of South Carolina which is a bummer.
